2 years ago, Jeremy, director of the Montreal Fringe Festival, challenged me to do "Anne of Green Gables". Not knowing what it was about, I could not resist the challenge. It took 2 years to get through the first 10 pages of the book. But once the first 10 pages were through, the rest went quickly. Later that year, I was told in Edinburgh that I was very much like Josephine Baker, the black dancer who took Paris by storm. I also read her biography. But then the conclusion was, that I felt very close to Anne, while I did not think at all that I was like Josephine Baker. Yes, maybe the flimsy flamboyant costumes and unbridled movements may be similar, but the character and the way of life and the outlook of life I felt very close to Anne. Anne was a head-strong wild little character. She has a vivid imagination and she actually lives that imagination. Her world of illusion becomes her reality and she had the charisma and enthusiasm to involve and envelope all those around her too. I can associate with that. Impossible just doesn't exist in my dictionary. Anne plays games - so do I. And my life is my game. And I enjoy it fully. And she dreams. I do too. All the time. And slowly but surely each dream turns into reality. Anne, inspite of her innocence, had control over her life and many of those around her. In a sense she would be far more threatening than Josephine Baker, who at the end had lost much of what she had gained. You never know what was under the apron and frills. You may be quite surprised! And I am having a great time working on this. Thank you, Jeremy! Maybe you have brought out a part of me I didn't even know about! |
